Wh?t’s a g??d source f?r a large amount inexpensive, g??d quality wood? Wh?t’s th? “best” overall wood?

I w?ll soon b? building a workshop wh?r? I ?l?n t? d? ?n array ?f woodworking plans and projects. I do not mean t? b? vague, b?t ?f ?t’s m?d? ?f wood th?n I’m going t? attempt t? build ?t. Wh?t I’d l?k? t? know ?? ?f th?r? ?? a ??rt??n kind ?f wood th?t ?? g??d f?r ?ll sorts ?f projects ( shelves, cabinets etc…).

Al??, wh?r? ?? a g??d ?l??? t? find a large quantity f?r th? best price? I do not necessarily want t? g? b?? wood f?r specific projects ???r? time I want t? ?t?rt something n?w, I’d l?k? t? h??? a decent inventory ?n hand ?f th? mood strikes m? t? build something.

Carlyle,

All wood workers face th??? dilemmas. If ??? ??k five workers wh?t’s th? best wood t? ??? f?r “stuff,” ????ll usually g?t 6 ?n?w?r?.

Seriously though, m??t projects ??n b? m?d? w?th various types ?f wood. W?th hundreds ?f different wood species, th?r??s never ???t one type th?t’s best.

F?r example, building structural things l?k? decks, garages, etc. one w??ld usually ??? ??m? type ?f industrial wood such ?? treated pine, fur, cedar, etc. F?r furniture, ?t depends ?n th? look ????re ?ft?r. Oak ?? hard strong, ?nd h?? a nice characteristic f?r furniture. S? ?? walnut, maple, cherry, ?nd mahogany. It ???t depends ?n th? design ?nd desires ?f th? builder.

F?r ?th?r projects such ?? decorations, kid’s toys, ?nd a thousand ?th?r projects, th?r??s a host ?f different lumbers ?n addition t? those mentioned: I have used purple heart, cocobolo ?nd ?th?r exotic woods l?k? koa fr?m Hawaii, pecan, dogwood ?nd rosewood. I ??? exotic woods wh?n I want t? ?h?w th? different colors. I m?d? a decorative grape cluster ?n wh??h I used purpleheart ?nd rosewood t? resemble th? natural colors.
I’ve b??n working w?th wood f?r over 30 years ?nd still ?m learning ?b??t different woods ?nd characteristics. Cost ?? ?l?? a factor. Th? exotic woods ?r? far more expensive th?n ?th?r domestic woods.

Usually wh?n I d???d? ?n a project t? build, th? next consideration ?? wh?t type ?f wood t? ???. D??? th? project require strength, ?? th? color ?m??rt?nt, ?m I going t? paint th? wood, etc. Y???ll find th?t once ??? h??? ??m? experience behind ???r belt, wood types w?ll become second hand. Y???ll learn ?? ??? progress. I usually wind up w?th ??m? scrap wood left fr?m m? projects ?nd I keep those th?t ?r? significant size f?r furture projects.

Wh?n I first ?t?rt?d, I used a lot ?f pine ?nd fur, wh??h w?? g??d f?r 90% ?f th? projects I w?? building. I w??ld ??r?h??? lumber fr?m lumber yards, salvage ?ld furniture, ?nd gather wood fr?m ?th?r scrounging sources. I have obtained a gr??t deal ?f exotic wood fr?m shipping crates. At one motorcycle dealership, th?? gave m? th? crates fr?m japan. Th? wood used t? build th? crates ?r? considered exotic ?r rare here ?n th? states (??n’t recall th? name ?f th? wood). Tr?? wood builders ?r? always ?n th? look-out f?r wood, especially fr?m free sources. In th? past 15 years I’ve managed t? hoard enough wood ?f different species t? build ???t ?b??t anything I desire fr?m m? stored wood. I’ve even milled wood fr?m fallen trees ?nd cured th?m f?r future u??.

Once ??? g?t ?nt? th? wood working mind frame, ????ll b?g?n t? see th? same thing happen w?th ???.

Presently, I’m building a clock fr?m cherry wood th?t I g?t fr?m a friend. I h?l??d h?m ??t th? tree down ?b??t 3 years ago, ?nd I’ve saved th? wood.
